What began as a completely normal grocery run quickly turned into a viral moment that left thousands of people online both fascinated and disturbed.
A woman from Cleveland says she was preparing dinner earlier this week when she noticed something unusual inside a package of cherry tomatoes she had purchased from a local supermarket.
At first, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
The tomatoes looked fresh. The packaging appeared sealed properly, and there were no obvious signs of spoilage. Like many people do after a quick trip to the store, she brought the groceries home, unpacked everything, and began preparing a salad for dinner.
That’s when she noticed one tomato felt slightly different from the others.
Curious, she sliced it open.
What she found inside immediately made her stop.
According to photos later shared online, the inside of the tomato appeared to contain a strange green growth sprouting from the center. The unexpected sight looked almost plant-like, causing immediate concern that the produce may have been contaminated or rotten.
“I honestly thought it was mold at first,” she reportedly wrote online. “But it looked too organized and too green to be normal decay.”
The images quickly spread across social media platforms, where users reacted with a mix of shock, confusion, and curiosity.
Some people claimed the photos made them want to inspect every tomato in their kitchen, while others joked that the vegetable was “mutating” or “coming back to life.”
But agricultural experts say the explanation is actually far less sinister than many people assume.
Specialists familiar with produce storage identified the phenomenon as something known as “internal sprouting” or “vivipary.” The rare process happens when seeds inside fruits or vegetables begin germinating before the produce is cut open.
While unusual, experts say it can naturally occur under certain storage and temperature conditions.
According to horticulture specialists, tomatoes contain hormones that normally prevent seeds from sprouting while still inside the fruit. However, as the tomato ages or experiences changes in moisture and temperature, those natural inhibitors can weaken, allowing the seeds to begin growing internally.
The result can look extremely strange when the fruit is opened.
“It surprises people because most consumers never expect to see visible sprouting inside fresh produce,” one expert explained in response to the viral images. “But biologically, the seeds are simply doing what they are designed to do.”
Despite the unsettling appearance, experts say internally sprouted tomatoes are not necessarily dangerous, though many people choose not to eat them due to texture and taste changes.
Still, the story sparked major reactions online.
Thousands of comments flooded the original posts, with users sharing similar experiences involving potatoes, peppers, strawberries, and even garlic unexpectedly sprouting from the inside.
Others admitted the photos completely ruined tomatoes for them.
“I’m checking every tomato from now on,” one user joked.
Meanwhile, food safety discussions quickly followed, with many people questioning how often unusual produce conditions go unnoticed in supermarkets.
Experts, however, emphasized that internal sprouting is generally linked more to aging and storage conditions than contamination.
As for the Cleveland shopper, she says the experience definitely changed how carefully she checks produce before cooking.
What started as a simple dinner preparation unexpectedly turned into one of the internet’s strangest grocery discoveries of the week.
And after seeing the photos themselves, many online users agreed on one thing:
They’ll probably never slice open a tomato quite so casually again.
