A viral video capturing a runner seemingly being “attacked” with a baton during a 4×200 meter relay at Liberty University in Virginia has sparked outrage against Alaila Everett, the athlete accused of causing the injury.
In response to mounting criticism and heated online reactions, Alaila decided to publicly share her perspective, clarifying what she insists was an accident rather than an intentional act.
Kaelen Tucker, the injured runner, was completing the second leg of the relay when footage appeared to show Alaila striking her in the head with a baton, causing Tucker to collapse to the ground. Tucker suffered a concussion and a suspected skull fracture from the incident.
Speaking with WAVYTV10, Alaila emphasized that the collision was accidental. “Everybody has feelings,” she explained, “so you’re physically hurt, but no one is thinking about my mental health. People are judging based on a single angle. After accidentally making initial contact, my baton got stuck behind her back and rolled upward. I lost balance, and when I moved my arms again, I unintentionally hit her. I know my intentions—I would never purposely hurt anyone.”
Since the incident went viral, Alaila has endured threats and harsh criticism on social media, deeply affecting her mental well-being. Her parents strongly support her, insisting their daughter would never intentionally harm another athlete.
However, the Tucker family remains upset, particularly because they claim the Everetts never reached out or apologized after the event. “They were standing near us at the track, even watching the replay, yet no one offered an apology or checked on her condition. Even if it was accidental, you’d expect someone to show concern,” they stated.
Alaila, meanwhile, says she wanted to apologize personally but was unable to reach Kaelen, who blocked her on social media following the incident.
The Tucker family has officially reported the situation to the sport’s governing body, prompting an investigation.
