Have you ever experienced being spanked as a child?
The use of spanking as a form of discipline has sparked a lot of debate, with the American Academy of Pediatrics stating that it is both ineffective and harmful. Nevertheless, some parents continue to support this method.
Kelly Clarkson is among those parents, and she shared her perspective during a radio interview in 2019.
As a mother of two, River Rose, 8, and Remy, 6, Kelly expressed that she “is not above spanking” when it comes to discipline. “I don’t mean hitting her hard,” she clarified. “I just mean a little spanking.”
Having been raised with this approach, she sees nothing wrong with it.
Kelly, who was raised in Texas, shared, “My parents used to spank me, and I turned out just fine. Being from the South, it’s pretty common for us to get spanked. If I ever found myself in the principal’s office, my mom would call and give her okay for a spanking. I consider myself a well-rounded person with strong character, so I believe it was all for the best.”
In addition to her many talents as a singer, songwriter, author, and TV personality, Clarkson recently celebrated receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The American Idol star acknowledged that her parenting style can be seen as controversial, especially when it comes to disciplining her children in public settings.
“It’s a tough situation when you’re out and about because people often judge and think it’s inappropriate, but I personally see nothing wrong with a spanking,” she explained. “I do believe in spanking, so you might see me giving my child a little smack at the zoo.”
She also mentioned that she prepares her kids in advance.
“I tell them, ‘Hey, if you don’t stop right now, I’m going to give you a little spank on your bottom because this behavior is unacceptable,’ and honestly, it has made a difference. She doesn’t act out like that as frequently.”
What are your thoughts on Kelly Clarkson’s approach to disciplining kids? Do you believe that parents should have the freedom to discipline their children in their own way?
