The President of Mexico has issued a response after Donald Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed to the Gulf of America.
Trump was inaugurated for a second term as President on January 20, and he has already signed off on some big plans.
Hailing his second presidency as “the golden age of America”, Trump made a number of promises to the American people as he added: “From this day forward, our country will flourish.”
Some of his plans are purely domestic, while others will impact foreign countries – such as his plan to acquire Greenland from Denmark.
Another of his plans involves renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America… which seems pretty trivial, but it’s caused an uproar.
The executive order, issued on January 21, argues for renaming geographic features to “honor the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans,” per the Guardian.
Among its provisions, the order seeks to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” describing it as “an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation.”
Trump’s directive frames the Gulf as “a crucial artery for America’s early trade and global commerce” and declares that it “will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping America’s future and the global economy”. In a clear and resolute response during a Tuesday morning briefing, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed the proposed name change.
“He says that he will call it the ‘Gulf of America’ on its continental shelf. For us it is still the Gulf of Mexico and for the entire world it is still the Gulf of Mexico,” she stated, per DW.com.
It’s worth noting that even if America recognizes the body of water by a new name, the rest of the world is not forced to do so. Emphasizing diplomatic restraint, Sheinbaum added it’s “important to always keep a cool head and refer to signed agreements, beyond actual speeches.”
She further assured the Mexican people: “The people of Mexico can be sure that we will always defend our sovereignty and our independence.”
It seems like Trump’s plans have doubters in the US too, as Hilary Clinton couldn’t contain herself when he announced it during his inauguration.
“Hilary Clinton p***ing her pants laughing when Trump said he will rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” one X user tweeted.
A second added: “Hillary Clinton laughing at Donald Trump babbling about wanting to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America is every sane person’s response.”
A third wrote: “Hillary Clinton can’t contain her laughter as Trump says he’s changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.”
